About This Blog

How to Talk Evangelical
is the title of my memoir (currently represented by Rachelle Gardner). It is an attempt to tell the story of my spiritual journey and, along the way, to reclaim and redefine a faith that has been oversimplified, jammed into a specific set of terms and phrases.

This blog is a way to continue to probe the language of spirituality outside of the pages of that memoir.

In a blog, there is space and time to explore terms that I didn’t get to in the book, words that didn’t make sense to delve into with the narrative arc of my story. God knows there are hundreds of them.

But, also, more importantly, a blog provides a way to have a discussion about those terms. I hope this blog can be something of a collaborative project. I believe that no single definition can fully capture the complexities of spiritual truths and realities, and so I hope you will join in telling your own stories and insights alongside mine.

The result, I believe, will be a kind of prism through which the Light may shine.

For a little more, check out my first blog post ever, The How to Talk Evangelical Project.

I plan to blog weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays. To contribute a posting to this blog, please email me at addiezierman@gmail.com. I’d love to hear what you’re thinking!

  1. A friend forwarded me the link to your site. I’ve read every last word, and come back as quickly as you press publish. I’m sifting through a similar journey myself. Your writing is refreshing. And your honesty is helping to normalize my questions. Needless to say, I’ll be back.

Your brother-in-law, Aaron, told my singles group at church about this blog so I decided to check it out. It made me laugh, I could so relate to what you are talking about. I totally get you, but feel so alone sometimes when most Christians I know do or say the things you talk about here. I often wonder if I am too sensitve, which I probably am, or too crazy, of which I struggled with depression and anxiety for years. But I have to keep being honest with myself and others, and not try to conform to something I can’t live with. I am exicted about your book and am looking forward to reading it. I am a writer too, but a newbie, I had thought about a blog like this and then I heard about you! I am so thankful to God for people like you, your honesty is refreshing. God bless you in your writing.

Thanks so much for taking the time to stop by, Amy, and for the kind comment. I get the loneliness, and I hope that as you read, you will come to know that you are in the company of so many people who are on this same journey. Thanks again.
